“A life without His love is nothing but slow death.” Hearing, drinking, singing, burning—all of these become a Sufi reflex, evocative of the twist toward sensory religion in the endless quest for Allah, witnessed by the parade of Persian poets. All acclaim feeling as the deepest source of the Divine, the pain of separation as the only path to true love, itself the path to true religion. Allah never ceases to move up and down the ladder of His names, but here He is marked as the transcendent/immanent Beloved of Persian verse. Thus He is ever sought but never caught. He is seen as Light but only in the mirror of our deepest self. He remains the object of endless sighing, the throb of ecstatic singing, beguiling yet eluding the besotted, burning lover.
